GXSA Events in 2012
GXSA organises rallies during the sailing season. These are normally held in the Solent where the majority of members‘ boats are berthed. Details of rally and event bookings are posted on the home page of site as they become available. Attendance is open to all members with vacant berths being found for those who do not have a boat available.
Below are a few snippets from rallies held in 2012.
GXSA Rallies 2012
September 8/9th - Yarmouth IOW
This rally organised by Stuart Gaunt in his Bavaria 37 ‘Coldplay’ had both an ambitious programme and the benefit of exceptionally fine weather. The total attendance was about forty who after gentle cruising in the Solent had the usual pontoon party and then a most enjoyable dinner at the Forresters Restaurant.
As usual, we all marvelled at the skill of Charlotte in the Yarmouth harbour team, firstly by managing to raft all our boats together, and then later unravelling us all without incident.
A feature of this rally was a gentle country walk along the Yar valley; we admired the countryside, snacked on home made beverages and comestibles and, much to the dismay of some members, met a local donkey while strolling through fields of rare breed sheep.
Osborne House – “Last Night at the Proms Concert” July 21st
This rally has been a popular event in the GXSA calender for many years. Sadly this year the concert was cancelled a few days beforehand as the gardens at Osborne house were waterlogged.
The cancellation did not daunt the spirits of the attendees, some of whom endured long passages to be there as, thanks to the alacrity of "The Johns", dinner for over forty was re-organised and held at the Island Sailing Club in Cowes. It turned out to be a splendid and convivial occasion.
Weekend April 28th – Bembridge
In spite of the strong winds forecast, 7 boats and 26 members attended.
The wind kindly reduced to F5 at times on Saturday and Sunday to allow us to enter and exit Bembridge on the afternoon high water. Then it blew F7 with heavy rain for most of the time we were there.
The Saturday evening began with a fine drinks party on Burnadebt, including champagne to celebrate two recent marriages of GXSA members!
We were then taken by the sailing club ferries for a very enjoyable and convivial meal at Brading Haven Yacht Club on the Saturday evening. The rain dampened enthusiasm for the Sunday morning walk to Bembridge lifeboat station but well done to Reg and Chris Hadwen who showed the flag for GXSA and walked all the way to the lifeboat station and back.
