Background

The association formed in 1965, is affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association and has around 300 members with interests extending to anything that floats or has floated - yachts, dinghies, multihulls, motor sailers, motor cruisers, narrowboats - they may cruise, race, charter or simply potter about. Most have a general interest in maritime matters or use the Association to retain contact with friends after "swallowing the anchor".

Events

"Saturday Specials" are whole day instructional courses on topics such as VHF, engine maintenance, survival and first aid. These events are often linked to RYA certification schemes

Social and Sailing Programme

In addition to the weekly winter meetings, the "Social and sailing programme" includes summer weekend rallies, usually one longer cruise in company, mid week visits to places of interest and an annual dinner.

Meetings

Meetings are held on Wednesday evenings at the Memorial Centre in Gerrards Cross at 8:15 pm. The large modern hall and bar opens at 7.30pm to enable members and guests to meet informally before and after the meetings. Typical attendances are between 50 and 90. Visitors are very welcome.

Topics

Each meeting is normally an illustrated talk presented either by a professional speaker or member. Topics are wide ranging and typically cover:

  • Cruising, particularly in interesting and occasionally exotic places
  • Seamanship, navigation and meteorology
  • Yacht design, construction, marine equipment and electronics
  • Nautical History, ecology and environmental issues
